How to prevent Toenails from getting discolored?

I noticed discolored toenails of people during my swimming classes and wondered how to prevent it from happening to my toenail. Discolored toenail are an indication of an underlying infection of toenail fungus and they are embarrassing as well. So I researched a bit on finding preventive measures and found out some interesting tips which I am sharing with you.

It is important that you don't outgrow the toenails, cut them to the edge of the toe. Don't cut them too short because it can make you prone to fungal infection leading to discoloring. Long toenails are likely to be damaged and can get bruised and discolored.

Many times people buy sneakers for running that are too short. Avoid using tight shoes as they put excessive pressure on the toenails causing damage and discoloring.

Use of nail polish for long period of time can be harmful to your toenails as it may stain your nails, it usually turns the color to yellow and this can lead to infection. So remove the nail polish after you wear it for a few days.

You are unlikely to pick up infection of toenail fungus if you wear slippers in the pool area, gymnasium or during public showers

Check if you feet is over sweating as it could lead to infection and discoloring. The skin of your feet should be exposed to light for sufficient amount of time as it will allow the skin to breath. It will keep the skin healthy and fungal infection can be avoided.

If one of your toenail gets infected make sure that you give medical attention to it as soon as possible because it can spread to other nails. Toenails discolor in white or yellow and is the easiest indication of infection, visit a doctor to seek treatment so that it does not grow out of control.

When there is a change in color in your toenail, and when it becomes thick, most likely the fungus afflicts you. It generally happens when there is an infestation of fungus in your toenail. Being a communicable disease, there are various reasons you will suffer from toenail fungus. You may not feel a pain, though, but certainly, the condition will embarrass you. The bad thing about suffering from this disease is that it takes lots of time to heal completely. However, toenails fungus can be prevented with some precautions.

These tips will help you in preventing toenail fungus:
  • Keep your feet as dry as possible. If you sweat a lot, see that you change your socks daily. Better if you could do it twice or thrice a day. If you have a desk-job, remove your shoes while working. If casual wear is allowed at your office, keep a slipper below your desk. When you reach the office, remove it and use the slipper. Since your feet inside the shoes are warm and moist due to insufficient air, the fungus can easily breed in your toenails.
  • Buy a good-quality foot power and use it whenever you come out of a bathroom or even after exercising. Before applying the power, wipe your feet with a clean towel. The powder will absorb the moisture and keep your feet dry.
  • Since fungus grows under and within toenails, wearing long nails can be harmful. Instead, cut nails short with a toenail clipper. Do not cut or trim it too short exposing the nail beds. This will also be painful.
  • Use personalized toenail clippers. Never share it even with your relatives. When you cut or trim your toenails, fungus stays at the end of the clippers and waits until a chance to infest the nails of the next user.
  • Before wearing and after removing socks and shoes, use anti-fungal spray on your feet. This spray will soak moisture on your feet and keep it dry.
  • If you are going for a pedicure in a saloon, see that the instrument they are using on your feet is sterilized properly before use.
We have the habit of paying more attention to the upper part of the body. We do not realize that we should also look after the lower parts, especially the foot since we use them maximum time. With these few tips, you can prevent yourself from getting infested by toenails fungus. To know more about this curable disease, visit Toenailsfungus.org.

Natural Treatments for Toenails Fungus

Toenails fungus is the result of entry of a microscopic dermatophytic fungal species into the toenails. This is a kind of nail abnormality medically termed as ‘onychomycosis’. It is an infection due to moisture and unhygienic condition widespread in the region near to toenails. Such a condition becomes favorable for fungal species to grow and reproduce. This ultimately causes infection which develops a yellow spot on the toenail tip initially and eventually results in discoloration and thickening of the nail.

Modern medicine users may not be aware that there is a natural treatment too for toenails fungal infection. Natural remedies are definitely effective and inexpensive, but they do require relatively more time and patience. Soaking your feet in magnesium sulphate which is commonly known as Epsom salt helps curing of onychomycosis. Feet must be soaked in very hot water with a palm full of Epsom salt taken in a shallow pan. It is always recommended to cut and file the affected nails right before this soaking treatment. Nails must be as short as possible so that the Epsom salt would reach the deeper layers of the affected part. Such a treatment if taken regularly becomes more accessible to the fungus and speeds up the recovery. You can also apply vinegar water, neem tree oil, garlic oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, iodine or glycolic acid on the affected nails.

Apart from all these natural remedies for curing of nail fungus, there are a few more treatments. Garlic is considered to be the best natural fungus killer. You can mash garlic with the help of garlic crusher and then apply that mashed garlic on your infected toenails. Oregano mixed with Cat’s claw herb is also a great natural treatment for prevention and elimination of the toenails fungus. As preventive measures, you can keep some things in mind. Avoid wearing shoes continuously, avoid going to a public shower or sauna barefooted, always dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, always wear properly fitting shoes and socks; and regularly disinfect clippers or scissors which you often use to clean your feet.

Tips to fight Toenail Fungus effectively

Toenail fungus is medically known as onychomycosis. In this case, infection occurs when a microscopic fungus enters one or more toenails. It develops a yellow spot on the toenail tip at the start and eventually results in discoloration and thickening of the nail. If the infection is severe, toenail disintegrates and causes severe pain.

Fungus attacks toenails in dark and wet surrounding to ensure growth and survival. It plagues through minute cuts in the nails and grows by eating the keratin protein available in nails.

One can apply antifungal cream (ointment) to the infected toenail, if the infection is mild. If it is not showing positive results, consult a doctor for toenail fungus treatment. Doctors usually suggest the use of antifungal lacquer over the infected and surrounding portion once daily. They may also prescribe antifungal lotion with urea content. In addition, oral medication is also provided for the faster growth of infection-free nail(s). Generally, an infected person needs to take these medicines for 6-10 weeks to ensure complete recovery. Laser treatment is also an effective method. The best way of preventing or curing this infection is to use natural products, as the use of medicines over a long period may cause side effects, causing skin rash and liver disorders. Vinegar consists of acetic acid, which can restrain the growth of fungus. You will require mixing vinegar and water in 1:2 ratios and immersing your feet in that mixture for 20-30 minutes and then dry it. It produces effective results if used regularly. Daily use of tea tree oil is also very effective. For this, first clean your feet properly and then apply it on the infected region.

You must take care of toenails even after getting rid of the infection, as it may reoccur. Make sure you use clean socks and shoes of appropriate size to keep the feet comfortable. Applying olive oil with salt helps a lot. Thus using such products will definitely keep you away from the infection or cure it. To know more about toenails fungus and its remedies, click here.

Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus

Medically termed as onychomychosis, the main cause of the toenail fungus infection is the moistness and unhygienic condition widespread in the toenail region that attracts fungi to breed, ultimately causing infection. This infection results in severe pain. Initially, it develops a yellow spot and later on, it slowly leads to discoloration, thickening, and degeneration of toenails. This infection may be a result of environmental or hereditary factors. Generally, the main factors causing infection include weak toenails, wearing tight socks and shoes, excessive contact with water or damp conditions.
Here are some useful home remedies for toenail fungus treatment:

  • Vinegar: Vinegar is highly effective. Take equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water and soak your feet in it for 20 minutes. Dry them and follow this method at least twice a day for quick recovery.
  • Turmeric: Turmeric is antiseptic in nature and helps destroy fungus. Apply turmeric paste to the affected region twice daily. Leave it for 20 minutes, wash it off with warm water, and dry it with towel.
  • Vics VapoRub: Rubbing vicks vaporub also helps a lot. In fact, it also strengthens toenails.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is also good. Dip a cotton ball in tea tree oil and rub it smoothly on the affected area.
  • Rubbing alcohol on the infected section thrice a day is highly beneficial. Application of yogurt, mixture of oregano and olive oil are also good as they inhibit fungal growth and provide relief.
  • Onion: You can use onion slices. Rub them on the infected toenails for 10 minutes and rinse them with water. Use of dilute hydrogen peroxide requires you to soak your feet in the solution for 15-20 minutes. Make sure you dry them after its application. This produces effective results, if applied at least twice daily.

Thus you must make use of such home remedies for toenail fungus. What’s equally important is to ensure cleanliness. If you are not experiencing any benefit from home remedies, then you must consult the doctor immediately. Make sure you do not stop taking care of toenails after recovery, as they are prone to recurrent infections. What can prevent you from infection is avoiding socks/shoes sharing and wearing comfortable shoes. Thus it is very easy to stay away from toenail fungus infection.
